Anna Sui Fall 2010 – Fashion Week Runway Review

DESIGNER: Anna Sui

INSPIRATION: The American Arts and Crafts movement

WHO WAS THERE:
Peaches Geldof, Irina Pantaeva, Irina Lazareanu, top fashion editors and glam rockers

TOP LOOKS: Prints! Murano glass print and lurex dot chiffon dress worn with a mixed print shirt ; wine-colored jacquard knit cardigan, pomegranate print metallic silk jacquard blouse, and nouveau swirls print Lurex jacquard skirt; georgette and velvet dress with antique rose embroidery worn with a blush fox fur stole

ACCESSORIES: Knit hats (from James Coviello); fur stoles (from Adrienne Landau); textured tights (from Anna Sui’s new leg wear line); snakeskin bags; amazing handcrafted necklaces and brooches incorporating actual tiles from Detroit’s Pewabic Pottery, founded in 1903, created by Erickson Beamon for Anna Sui

WHAT WE THOUGHT: Anna Sui showed a knockout fall collection by combining a dizzying array of prints and fabrics–florals, fauna, stripes, swirls, and jacquard were all in use. A lesser talent might not have been able to pull it off, but Sui did–with flying colors. Speaking of which, the pretty, calming, palette featured cornflower blue, wine, cocoa, grapefruit, plum, and champagne hues. Ultra-feminine looks were perfectly paired with textured outerwear, like chunky cardigans, quilted jackets, and fur vests and boleros–we call that a crafty move on Sui’s part.

DESIGNER: Milly

INSPIRATION: The Nouvelle Vague films of Jean-Luc Godard, “Bande a Part,” “Pierrot Le Fou” and “Une Femme Est Une Femme”

TOP LOOKS: Navy wool sparkle bouclé coat with a navy and black wool mini skirt; crimson double-faced wool coat over a black and crimson cashmere sweater dress; navy and black striped sequin cap-sleeve dress over a navy cashmere tie neck sweater

WHO WAS THERE: Editor Suzy Yalof Schwartz; Julia Stiles and Eisabeth Hasselbeck (both dressed in head-to-toe Milly)

ACCESSORIES: Leather gloves in primary colors; tights in bright hues; textured tights; headbands; Mary Janes; berets

WHAT WE THOUGHT:
“Godard’s artsy, chic women serve as my muse this season, with their clever combinations of bold hues, clean, modern silhouettes and feminine, cool attitude,” says Milly designer Michelle Smith in her liner notes. The collection hit all those points and then some.

The color palette of crimson, navy, black and ivory were hues that every gamine in the making should have as wardrobe staples. We love how Smith mixes rich fabrics together to get an artfully layered look. The black rabbit fur luggage lock jacket embodies the effortlessly chic look the designer was striving for.

And check out this uber-exciting Milly beauty news.

Golden Globes weekend kicked off with the Critics’ Choice Awards. And there was no shortage of Hollywood glamour.

The ladies who we felt really turned it out in the dress department (and from head-to-toe, really) were Marion Cotillard, Diane Kruger and Emily Blunt.

As the star of the latest installment of the Lady Dior Web saga, it’s no surprise that Cotillard, who was nominated for best supporting actress for movie-musical “Nine,” wore Dior Couture on the red carpet. Her exquisite pale green silk georgette embroidered dress, featuring a bustier bodice, was accompanied by satin shoes and clutch, also from the fashion house.

Cotillard’s jewelry, courtesy of Chopard, amounted to a whopping 83 carats! That includes her fancy shape white diamond sautoir set in yellow gold (55 carats), trillion shape white diamond pendant (12 carats) and an emerald cut fancy yellow diamond ring set in platinum and yellow gold (16 carats).

Not one to shy away from sparkle, Blunt stepped out in a shimmery iron gray sequined tulle dress with fish scale embroidery by Georges Chakra Couture. “The Young Victoria” star kept the rest of her look chic and simple with minimal jewelry and a black python clutch from Cecelia.

Kruger, who would look beautiful in a burlap bag, chose a white asymmetrical number from Donna Karan that hugged her body in all the right places. The “Inglorious Basterds” star looked ethereal as ever with the goddess draping and a pair of Jimmy Choo heels (which were hidden by the long train… oh well).

Plus, see the shocking on-stage kiss everyone’s talking about.

And make sure to visit us tonight for everything Golden Globes: The dresses, the hair, the makeup…

H&M, Walmart Reportedly Destroy and Discard Unsold Clothing

H&M reportedly discards unsold clothing. Photo: Getty Images

Slashing prices is common around the holidays, but slashing clothes?

The Herald Square NYC location of fast fashion retailer H&M allegedly discards garbage bags filled with unsold clothing which has been destroyed with holes or slashes on a regular basis, according to The New York Times.

“At the back entrance on 35th Street, awaiting trash haulers, were bags of garments that appear to have never been worn. And to make sure that they never would be worn or sold, someone had slashed most of them with box cutters or razors, a familiar sight outside H&M’s back door,” reports the paper.

Also found on 35th Street were destroyed garments tagged for sale at Walmart.

A manager in the H&M store on 34th Street told the Times that “inquiries about its disposal practices had to be made to its United States headquarters.” But after 10 phone calls and emails, no one from H&M HQ ever responded back to the paper.

While a Walmart spokesperson told the paper that they “normally donate all unworn goods to charities and would have to investigate why the items found on 35th Street were discarded.”

Sounds like garments aren’t the only things that these retailers might have to patch up.

Then there are clothes that are meant to be full of holes.

MCM CEO Sung-Joo Kim Talks to StyleList

Remember MCM? If you’re a child of the ’80s then chances are you coveted their logo-emblazoned Tambourine bag with the tassel, the epitome of cool back then. Fast forward a couple of decades and MCM (Mode Creation Munich) is staging a comeback, complete with a brand new look that’s totally modern and chic.

At the helm of the relaunch is MCM’s CEO Sung-Joo Kim, one of the most famous businesswomen in Asia — she was named one of the “Top 50 Women to Watch” by the Wall Street Journal. A lauded humanitarian and fashion veteran (her company, Sungjoo Group launched Gucci, YSL and Sonia Rykiel in Korea), Sung-Joo’s vision for the new MCM goes way beyond just creating drool-worthy bags.

StyleList caught up with her during a quick stop in the States after accepting the 2009 award for Ethics in Business from the International Association for Human Values in the Netherlands.

An MCM Bag. Photo: courtesy of MCM

StyleList: Congratulations on your latest awards (she was also just named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young). How did you become such a successful business woman?
Sung-Joo: My motivation is to prove that women can do it. Asia is 2/3 the global population and half of them are women, but it is still a very disgruntled environment where regardless of how smart a woman is, they are treated like a second-class citizen. Instead of compromising, I stood up against it. Out of 500 employees at MCM, 90% are women. Women’s leadership makes such a big difference. We have different strengths than men. We’re creative, imaginative, detail-oriented and very good at multi-tasking. I’m very involved in women’s organizations, such as Women’s Leadership Exchange, Global Summit of Women and Enterprising Women. My aim is to empower, encourage and inspire other women.

StyleList: What is your advice to the next generation of professionals?
Sung-Joo: We are all born with a precious talent. Our life journey is to discover what that talent is. Once you find a vocation that fits your talent, that’s when you should start contributing back to society to make a difference. Often our capitalist society teaches us only how to be successful, to make a lot of money and to enjoy yourself. That’s very ego-driven and materialistic. When you are very mission-driven and not money-driven, it makes your life very clear. We donate 10% of the company’s profits back to society and 30% of my personal income goes back to society. With honest hands you can be more successful.

StyleList: What’s your advice to other luxury companies on how to survive this recession?
Sung-Joo: We as luxury leaders, CEOs and entrepreneurs need to practice responsible luxury. We have to educate our customers on how to share with society. We also have to work on global warming issues.

StyleList: Tell us about the relaunch of MCM. How is the brand changing?
Sung-Joo: MCM was more logo-driven before. We’re giving it a younger look and make it a brand for 21st century, high-powered, global professional men and women. Our products are functional, elegant, high-quality, sophisticated and fit for traveling around the globe. We have an MCM boutique at the Plaza Hotel in New York City and are planning to open more in Beverly Hills and Boca Raton.

StyleList: If someone is looking to buy one luxury bag, how should they decide on a style?
Sung-Joo: Buy something for an investment–instead of just to use for a few months or a year. Quality is key and in terms of design, it should have a functional purpose. The bag I’m carrying now (the MCM Glossy Dundee Patent Shopper in Cherry Patent Ostrich) is the perfect example. It fits my computer and has lots of zippers inside for organization. It also adds color to an all-black outfit. A bag used to be just for decoration–but not anymore!

StyleList: What’s the one item you always have in your bag?
Sung-Joo: I’ve been carrying a red wallet now for over 15 years, not the same one, but it’s always been red. Being so busy with work and raising a child, I’m always leaving something behind, but if it’s red, it’s easier to spot. Also, red brings luck!

StyleList: What are your handbag gift-giving tips?
Sung-Joo:
Small leather pieces are less risky. Shoppers also make great gifts. I would also advise to give a colorful bag because when you shop for yourself, you tend to go conservative and stay with a safe color. But a nice color really brightens up an outfit and lifts the mood. It’s called color therapy!

Check out the new MCM collection at Saks Fifth Avenue or Bloomingdale’s.

Jessica Simpson’s Bizarre Twitter Video

Looks like it’s going to be a happy new ear for Jessica Simpson.

In a strange Twitter video, the pop star is shown holding a burning candle to her ear as her hairstylist/BFF Ken Paves sings Christmas songs to her off-camera.

Although it’s not clearly stated in the video, it seems as though the ex-Mrs. Lachey is trying the alternative medicine practice of ear candling, which is meant to remove ear wax and promote well-being.

In the video, Jess giggles and complains about being nauseous while Ken sings to calm her nerves. Jess’s money-making locks are protected from the flame by a candle tray that Ken fashioned out of a Papa John’s pizza box. Classy!

By the sounds of Jess’s uncomfortable yelps throughout the video, we’ll be sticking to Q-Tips for now!

Model/activist Lauren Bush hosted a “FEED-raiser and market” at the Chelsea Art Museum in New York City for her FEED Foundation.

As guests arrived, they were given a FEED 100 bag (which, thanks to Whole Foods, has become de rigueur for toting home a paycheck’s worth of organic groceries), as well as a $5 voucher to spend at the makeshift marketplace inside.

The wares on sale included glass beaded bracelets handmade by women artisans in Rwanda from Same Sky and a traditional marriage necklace by Kenyan artisan Rebecca Lolosoli provided by the Vital Voices Women Artisans Product & Business Development Group.

Diane von Furstenberg loved one of Losoli’s necklaces so much she showed it in her Spring 2010 runway show.

“Our product line has multiplied very quickly, which is exciting,” Bush told StyleList, in front of a booth stocked with FEED bears.

“We just launched a FEED backpack that supports community health workers in Africa as well as a FEED Read book bag for Barnes & Noble.”

What’s on Lauren Bush’s holiday wish list? “A Kindle — I always have a stack of books waiting to be read,” she revealed. Could there be a FEED Kindle cover in the works?

Carla Bruni Sarkozy came in second place again this year, having lost out last time to Asma Assad, the Syrian president’s wife. Elle cited Mrs. O’s support of emerging designers and her ability to make the cinched cardigan official dress as her winning style attributes.
